    Mayor's Column June 2017

    2017-06-13 13:15:00Mayor Rick Bonnette's Monthly Column

Good news for Georgetown particularly those youngsters that scooter, skateboard and BMX riders.  Council has approved that Town staff proceed with the detailed design and consultation for the construction of an action sports facility at the Gellert Community Park.  Town staff carried out a comprehensive survey of action sports users.  This will be in the 2018 budget to construct a community skateboard park and two multi-purpose courts.

The Halton Hills Chamber of Commerce along with the Town of Halton Hills is participating in Canada's Most Patriotic Town Challenge.  It's simple, show a picture of the flag (in your window) or fly the Canadian flag and register it on this website (  As of today's writing we have over 15,000 flags registered!  You can also become a street or park sponsor for $200 and receive 75 garden flags to be distributed in a designated area of Halton Hills by June 30.  We can all help to achieve our goal of being part of history by proudly flying the Canadian flag on July 1.

Don't forget to celebrate Canada Day in the Glen where there will be many activities.  After that, come down to Acton Prospect Park for more festivities by the Acton B.I.A. beginning at 6pm.

Later enjoy the fireworks by the Acton Firefighters Association.  Let's give a big hand to all of the volunteers who work tirelessly putting on Canada Day Festivities.

The Halton Hills Bike Challenge was established in 2012 to promote active transportation and healthy, active lifestyles and I'm happy to say that it's now in its 5th year!  This year, in celebration of Canada's 150th anniversary, Halton Hills has set a goal of 416,000kms, which is the total length of all paved roads in Canada.  So far the community has biked all equivalent length of all the paved roads in Yukon, the North West Territories and British Columbia and we are currently in Alberta.  That's over 75,000kms to date with just over 120 days to go.  Way to go Halton Hills!

Congratulations to Ed DeSousa who retired as Town Treasurer after 18 years dedicated service.  On behalf of myself and council we wish Ed all the best in his retirement.
