    Mayor's Column May 2017

    2017-05-11 09:44:00Mayor Rick Bonnette's Monthly Column

This year marks the sesquicentennial of Canada – 150 years old!  The Town has recognized this historical year by forming the Canada 150 Steering Committee comprising of staff and community members.  Results from the committee are a mix of exciting and innovative initiatives.  Visit haltonhills.ca for more information on all of the Town’s 150 initiatives.

Speaking of Canada 150, here’s how you can be a part of history.  The Halton Hills Chamber is inviting all residents of Halton Hills to join in a community wide challenge.  The Chamber has challenged all residents to fly the Canadian flag to claim the title of “Canada’s Most Patriotic Town”.  The goal is to fly 30,000 Canadian flags on July 1.  The goal is to create a sea of red and white in our gardens, along our streets, outside stores and in our parks.  You can purchase a flag at the:
Halton Hills Chamber of Commerce & BIA at 8 James St, Georgetown
Acton BIA at 45 Mill St. E.
Halton Hills Public Library (Acton & Georgetown)
Downtown Georgetown Farmers Market (Saturday mornings starting in June)
For more information or to register your existing flag please visit:  haltonhillscanada150.ca to see how you can be a part of history!

Councillor Jane Fogal and her committee have already had many community cyclists to the moon and back with the Community Bike Challenge.  This year they have set a lofty goal to cycle virtually all the paved roads of Canada, a whopping total of 416,000 kilometres.  When the virtual ‘Tour de Canada’ is completed, Bike Challenge sponsors will donate $45,000 to the Georgetown Hospital Foundation towards the purchase of new x-ray equipment.  Cyclists can sign up as individuals or as a family by going to haltonhillsbikechallenge.ca.  Cyclists do not do any fundraising but help fundraise for local health care by simply logging their kilometres.
