    Mayor's Column August 2017

    2017-08-10 17:06:00Mayor Rick Bonnette's Monthly Column

Last year we cycled the distance from the Moon to the Earth with a victory lap of Canada. This year we tackle a bigger Challenge. We are cycling all 416,000kms of paved roads in Canada. Are you signed up for the Halton Hills Bike Challenge?  We're currently at 188,000 Kms and we need your help to finish strong! Our generous community sponsors have pledged $45,000 to the Georgetown Hospital Foundation, but only if we complete our challenge.  Visit our website at haltonhillsbikechallenge.ca and sign up today to help achieve our goal!

The Halton Black History Awareness Society will open an exhibition called ‘Colours of Ontario – Four Seasons’ in the Sisnett Lobby of the Halton Hills Cultural Centre on Tuesday, August 22.  This exhibit features five artists: Nicole Alexander, Anna Maria Dickinson, Georgia Fullerton, Jennylynd James and Tony Miller.  Some were born and have lived here all of their lives; others have adopted Canada, and Ontario, as their home. Please take some time to drop by and see this exhibition before September 2.

The new Fall and Winter Community Activity & Service Guide arrives today, August 17th and registration starts August 30th.  It will also be available at Town facilities and on the Town’s website at haltonhills.ca/guide.

I’d like to thank all the volunteers, the Acton BIA and all of the sponsors who put on the Leathertown Festival event.

Splash pads are a family-friendly place for children to enjoy the warm weather in a safe and fun environment. Enjoy our splash pads in both Acton and Georgetown, open daily from 9:30 AM – 8:00 PM. The splash pad season may be shortened or extended depending on weather; pads will be kept open as long as possible.

Food banks are often forgotten in the summer and usually remembered only at Christmas time.  It is as important to give them your support in the summer.  Please contact your local food bank to see what food items are needed.

Acton Foodshare (519-853-0457) is located at 352 Queen Street, Unit 6 (behind Beckers Store).  Open Tuesdays from 8:30 to 12:00 and from 12:30 to 2:30.

The Georgetown Breadbasket (905-873-3368) is located at 55 Sinclair Avenue Unit12.  They are open Tue: 5:00pm-7:00pm, Wed: 8:30am - 12:00pm and Sat: 8:30am - 12:00pm
