Chickens Coming Home to Roost this Fall

HALTON HILLS, ON – At yesterday’s meeting, Halton Hills Town Council approved a revision to the Responsible Pet Owner’s By-law 1994-07 to effectively allow for the keeping of hens per prescribed criteria.

The change follows an earlier report in September 2021, that saw Council approve the program in principle, following the by-law update.

“While I know passing this by-law may ruffle some feathers, I have to believe that residents who get chickens will be responsible owners,” quipped Mayor Rick Bonnette. “This is new territory for us so we will be watching the program closely to ensure that it doesn’t go fowl.”

People living in the following urban areas may apply for the opportunity to have up to 4 hens in their backyard: residential areas in Acton and Georgetown, hamlets (Glen Williams, Norval) and rural clusters (Ashgrove, Ballinafad, Bannockburn, Crewson’s Corners, Henderson’s Corners, Hornby, Limehouse, Silvercreek and Terra Cotta).
