Discover Black History Month Programs 2022

HALTON HILLS, ON – The Town invites residents of Halton Hills to celebrate Black History Month this February with a series of experiential and educational programs presented by Cultural Services and the Halton Hills Public Library. Mayor Rick Bonnette will recognize Black History Month at the upcoming February 7th Council meeting. “As we continue to shape our community as an inclusive and equitable place to live, work and play, it’s essential that we learn from the legacy, and engage with the stories of Black Canadians; this month, and throughout the year.”

This year, highlights of Black History Month programming include:

• “An Evening with Rob Green,” Halton Hills Lecture Series (February 1)
• “The Stone Thrower” Storywalk at the Library (February 8-13 in Acton, February 18-25 in Georgetown)
• Clef Notes to Canvas, in partnership with the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton (February 19)
• Explore Rhythms on the Djembe with Luckystickz (February 21)
• Local Lens: The Black Experience in Halton, in partnership with the Halton Black History Awareness Society (February 22 – April 15)
• Winter Reading Challenge where patrons are encouraged to explore diverse authors, including Black authors and creators
• Equity and Diversity Book Club featuring “Project 1619: A New Origin Story” by Nikole Hannah-Jones (roundtable discussion on February 8)

Black History Month was also recognized via a proclamation submitted by the African Caribbean Association through the Town’s new online process. Proclamations are posted on the Town’s website and included in the General Information section of Council agendas.
