HALTON HILLS, ON – The Halton Black History Awareness Society’s Annual Emancipation Art exhibition is on view from July 27 – September 11 at the Helson Gallery in the Town of Halton Hills Cultural Centre. This vibrant exhibition features 14 artists in a variety of media exploring the meaning of freedom.
Artists include Nicole Alexander, Kristen Allicock, Rohan Brown, Joan Butterfield, Amber Carroll, Neville Clarke, Georgia Fullerton, Ian Grant, Mei Lein Harrison, Sheryl Keen, Charmaine Lurch, Henrietta Olave, Alanja Simmons and Sketch One. Also featured courtesy of the Oakville Historical Society, is a display of historical photographs celebrating Black Canadians.
“I am pleased we are able to showcase this celebration of freedom and commemorate the important occasion of Emancipation Day, the date in 1834 when slavery was abolished throughout the British Empire,” said Mayor Rick Bonnette.
The Helson Gallery is located in the Town of Halton Hills Cultural Centre at 9 Church St., Halton Hills and is open Wednesdays – Saturdays from 1 – 5 p.m.; Sunday hours of 1 – 5 p.m. resume on September 11. The Helson Gallery is staffed by volunteer docents and hours may be subject to their availability.
