HALTON HILLS, ON – This year’s theme for the annual emergency preparedness campaign is Be Prepared. Know Your Risks. From May 7-13, all levels of government, and various organizations and businesses, will work to share the common message of recognizing potential risks and preparing for the unexpected.
Peter Faria, Emergency Management Coordinator with the Halton Hills Fire Department notes, “The best way to prepare for an emergency is to take steps to avoid one where you can. This means taking fire safety precautions at home or work so you are not scrambling at the last minute if a crisis occurs. This means speaking with your family to ensure everyone knows what to do if disaster strikes. While we can’t prevent all emergencies, having a plan in place will make it easier to cope in the event something happens.”
Residents are encouraged to create their plans now, in advance of an emergency. Information is available for download from the Town’s website or copies can be picked up at municipal arenas and the Gellert Community Centre from May 7-13.
An emergency plan should include the following:
“Safeguard your family, your employees, colleagues and yourself by making plans,” said Mayor Ann Lawlor. “The Town has lots of resources to support people in creating their own emergency preparedness plans.”
Residents are encouraged to expand their emergency preparedness efforts and reach out to neighbours and friends who are vulnerable or need assistance such as seniors, pet owners, and people with disabilities and special needs.
The Town of Halton Hills, with a population of approximately 60,000, consists of two urban centres, Georgetown and Acton, the Halton Hills Premier Gateway employment area, three hamlets – Glen Williams, Stewarttown and Norval – and several smaller settlements. Halton Hills has long been recognized for its natural beauty, active agricultural community, high quality of life and proximity to major centres, including Brampton, Mississauga and Toronto. The Town is ranked as one of the top small communities in Canada by a national magazine.
