HALTON HILLS, ON – “We stand united and categorically reject any efforts to undermine the sovereignty of Canada,” was the message brought by Councillor D’Arcy Keene. The resolution responded to comments regarding Canada becoming the 51st state by President Trump prior to his inauguration. Today, Halton Hills Town Council unanimously passed a resolution put forward by Councillors Keene and Brass “…for a Canada that remains strong, free, independent, and characterized by peace, order, and good government”.
Keene, a local Councillor, having lived in eastern and western Canada, noted that: “Despite differences in geography and local culture, in my experience, what all Canadians have in common is their love and pride for this great country. Sovereignty is important to our citizens and we recognize that the values we hold dear are not the same as our American counterparts.”
The motion, co-introduced and seconded by Councillor Jason Brass, also rejected “…the use of economic force such as tariffs.” According to Brass, “It was important to me to support the motion. As an owner in the food and beverage industry, with regular cross border trade, I know that this approach would hurt both Canadian and American businesses. We need to stand together against ill-advised economic measures.”
Mayor Ann Lawlor recognized that it was unusual for a municipality to weigh in on a federal matter. “It may seem odd for our local Council to be discussing the issue of sovereignty and tariffs, but I know our community,” she said. “Halton Hills earned the title of “Canada’s most patriotic town” when residents flew over 57,000 Canadian flags to celebrate the country’s 150th year. And several years ago our Council weighed in on “Buy America” trade barriers. We want our leaders – provincially and federally - to know we stand behind them; that we care deeply about our country and are united against international bullying by anyone, from any country.”
