HALTON HILLS, ON – Canada is recognizing the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, marking her 70th anniversary on the throne. As Canada’s longest reigning Sovereign she is the first to receive a platinum jubilee. To mark this historic milestone, a series of initiatives are taking place throughout Canada, to honour the Queen’s service and dedication to this country and recognize Canadian achievements over the last 7 decades.
“Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is an icon, and, for many Canadians, she is the only Sovereign they have ever known. This anniversary means a lot to many Halton Hills’ residents.” said Mayor Rick Bonnette.
Halton Hills Public Library will be hosting a display in honour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee from now through to Monday, July 4. The display is located inside the Local History Room of the Georgetown Branch, which is on the lower level of the library. The display includes memorabilia related to the coronation or other jubilee events.
A colour guard made up of members from both the Georgetown and Acton branches of the Royal Canadian Legion will join the Town for a raising of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee flag to commemorate this unprecedented anniversary at 9:30 a.m. on May 30 at Town Hall.
Local community groups, Light Up the Hills and the Georgetown Pipe Band have come together to illuminate the ‘Tree of Hope’ and offer music in recognition of this occasion. The event takes place at Dominion Gardens Park in Georgetown, on June 2 at 9:15 p.m. The ‘Tree of Hope’ will be lit up for the month of June through to July 2.
Residents are welcome to visit the library display, gather for the flag raising, or observe the tree lighting event.
