HALTON HILLS, ON – In its newest exhibition, the Helson Gallery is recognizing the contributions of Canadian artist Florence Helena McGillivray (1864 - 1938). Florence McGillivray: Her Story and Influence on Canadian Art History explores the artistic achievement of Florence McGillivray, who deserves credit for the influence she had on Canadian art history.
McGillivray was best known for her post-impressionist style capturing the Canadian landscape. As an artist, teacher and traveler during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, she excelled in her artistic endeavors but did not gain the prominence of her male counterparts. McGillivray travelled extensively in Canada, the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean, learning from the best art instructors and documenting her travels. McGillivray was progressive, well educated, and experimented with a variety of art styles.
This unique exhibition is co-curated by researcher and author Bill Allen, who recently published his third book about the artist. Bill is responsible for bringing together this impressive collection of art on loan from private and public collections. His ongoing dedication to the artist is truly inspirational. He will share his in-depth knowledge and research in a public talk at the Helson Gallery on Thursday April 11, from 6 - 8 p.m.
The show runs from February 28 until May 26, 2024. All are welcome to attend the opening reception and book launch in the Helson Gallery on March 2 from 3 – 5 p.m. to view the exhibition and speak to the curators.
The PhotoArt exhibition returns to the Sisnett Lobby of the Cultural Centre on March 4. This annual photography competition, show, and sale is organized by Halton Hills photographers to promote awareness and education in the art of photography within the community.
"It’s wonderful to see such an important and impactful Canadian artist featured at the Helson Gallery,” said Mayor Lawlor. Adding, “The PhotoArt competition, show, and sale is a great way to support Halton Hills photographers.”
The Helson Gallery is located at 9 Church St., Halton Hills and is open Wednesday to Saturday 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 – 5 p.m.
