During heat warnings, these cooling centres are open 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., giving residents a space to escape the heat. Visitors will have access to bottle filling stations, washrooms and limited seating.
Residents are urged to avoid heat-related illness and recognize that while everyone is at risk during a heat wave, some groups are more vulnerable than others. Those most at risk include older adults (65+), infants and young children and the chronically ill, including people with asthma. The public is advised to "beat the heat" by taking these precautions:
Drink lots of water and natural fruit juices
Stay out of the blazing sun or heat. UV rays are strongest between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Avoid strenuous physical activity outdoors, including gardening and lawn maintenance
Close blinds and shutters during the daytime and open them at night
Take cool showers and mist yourself and your clothing with cool water to help keep yourself from overheating
Never leave children, older adults or pets unattended in a car, even for a short period of time. During a heat alert, please take a moment to call or visit family and neighbours who may be at risk.
