The Town of Halton Hills began to experience an increase in the construction of large-scale residential rebuilds, often referred to as "monster homes", which raised public concern about the character and integrity of the Town's mature neighbourhoods. The Mature Neighbourhoods Character Study was initiated in May 2016 to respond to this public concern by examining whether the Town's Official Plan and Zoning By-law are effective in maintaining the character of the mature neighbourhoods of Georgetown and Acton.

Project status
July 14, 2017 - The Mature Neighbourhoods Character Study is now complete, and its recommendations are now in full force and effect. The recommendations were approved by Council on May 29, 2017, through Report PI&2017-0056 and By-laws 2017-0032 (Official Plan Amendment) and 2017-0033 (Zoning By-law Amendment). Following an appeal period mandated under the Planning Act, the two aforementioned By-laws came into effect on June 29, 2017.

Interim Control By-law 2016-0009 |

In order to restrict any large scale single-detached dwellings within mature areas of the Town during completion of the Mature Neighbourhoods Character Study, Council enacted Interim Control By-law 2016-0009 in February 2016, through Report PI-2016-0028. Interim Control By-law 2016-0009 was originally enacted for one year, however was subsequently extended for an additional year through By-law 2017-0009 in February 2017, through Report P&I-2017-0008, to allow for completion of the Mature Neighbourhoods Character Study. Upon completion of the Study, Interim Control By-law 2016-0009 was repealed in its entirety through By-law 2017-0042 in July 2017. |
