Bridge design and maintenance |
The Transportation and Public Works Department performs routine structure inspections on bridges and culverts and reports on identified minor routine maintenance and repair items to be addressed. The local area surrounding the bridge is inspected for general defects including erosion problems and obstructions to water flow. Bridges may be inspected following damage caused by accidents, severe weather conditions, flooding and ice jams, or where a known problem exists that requires regular monitoring. In addition, the Transportation and Public Works Department carries out detailed inspections of the structures in accordance with the Ontario Provincial Regulation of the Ontario Public Transportation and Highway Improvement Act and the Ontario Bridge Inspection Manual (OSIM) as part of its Asset Management Program. All structures are inspected biannually. Results of both the routine and detailed inspections guide the Town’s Capital and Operational Programs (Budgets) to schedule the maintenance, repair and rehabilitation requirements of each structure. These priorities are reflected in the Town’s Asset Management Plan. |
