Parking regulations in Halton Hills

There is a six-hour on street parking limit in Halton Hills. There are some residential areas throughout Halton Hills where parking is permitted for a maximum of twelve hours however, in these areas, you will see signage in the immediate area identifying the extended parking permission. Please make sure you see the sign for extended parking before leaving your vehicle for longer than six hours. In addition, there is no parking:

In any area where a “No Parking Anytime” sign is displayed
On a grass or unpaved boulevard
Within 3 metres of a fire hydrant
Within 6 metres of a crosswalk
Facing the wrong direction on the road
On or overhanging a sidewalk
In a manner that obstructs traffic, road repair or snow removal
On any highway for the purpose of displaying the vehicle for sale
Within 1 metre of a driveway

Winter Parking

Please avoid parking your vehicle on the street when it snows. Parked vehicles interfere with the clearing and salting of roads for emergency vehicles and the travelling public. A parking exemption will not prevent you from getting a ticket for obstructing snow clearing or road maintenance operations. Your vehicle may still be tagged and/or towed even if you have obtained a parking exemption during winter weather events.

Please do not push or place snow on the road or sidewalk when clearing your property. Placing snow on the roadway is a violation of the Town of Halton Hills Highway Encumbrance By-law No. 2019-0008. Learn more under the Winter on-street parking prohibition section of this page.

Accessible parking

Individuals who have been issued a valid accessible parking permit by the Province of Ontario will be exempt from on-street timed parking limits, except during the Winter Control Ban.
No person shall park a Vehicle in a Accessible Parking Space unless a current valid Permit has been issued to that person, organization or to a passenger being picked up or transported in the Vehicle and Such Permit must be displayed on or in the Vehicle in accordance with requirements of the Highway Traffic Act.

Boulevard parking

A surge of resident queries on the issue prompted Halton Hills Town Council to pass an interim motion at a Special Meeting of Council on January 15, 2019. The motion passed by Town Council reads as follows:

That enforcement staff be directed to allow boulevard parking where the vehicle is;
- Parked and fully encompassed on the paved portion of the boulevard with all tires fully on the hard surface
- Fully parked on the hard surface between the sidewalk and curb/road edge
- Facing the direction of traffic if parked parallel to the road
- Parked within the boundaries of the home's projected property line
And further that enforcement staff continue to enforce boulevard parking infractions where;
- Vehicles are parked on the landscaped portion of the boulevard or access the paved portion of the boulevard by driving over the landscaped portions of the boulevard
- Any portion of the vehicle is hanging over the sidewalk or curb/road edge
- Vehicles interfere with snow plowing efforts
- Vehicles are parked less than 30 metres from an intersection.
And further that boulevard parking be allowed for single family, semi-attached homes and townhomes where driveways are facing a Town street;
- And further that this motion be in effect until such time as staff bring forward a report to Council with an informed recommendation, and any proposed amendments to the Uniform Traffic Control By-law, based on safety and well-being of residents.

Parking on Town boulevards

Vehicles are permitted to park on the paved boulevard section of a driveway
A vehicle can park on the paved portion of the driveway, facing the direction of traffic is permitted
Vehicles that are parked on the landscaped portion of the boulevard or hanging over the sidewalk or curb/road edge will be ticketed
Please be advised that the motion regarding boulevard parking, passed on January 15, 2019, is an interim measure temporarily in effect until further discussion.

No person shall Park a Vehicle on a Fire Route where Authorized Signs have been erected and maintained which prohibits Parking.
No Person shall Stop a Vehicle on a Fire Route where Authorized Signs have been erected and maintained which prohibits Stopping.

Off-Street Parking

Unless otherwise posted, all on-street parking in Halton Hills has a maximum six-hour parking limit. Parking overnight is not permitted between 2 and 6 a.m. from November 15 to April 15 as per the Uniform Traffic Control By-law No. 2023-0094. Parking is not allowed on all streets for longer than six hours under the jurisdiction of the Town of Halton Hills, unless there are authorized signs indicating otherwise. Overnight parking is prohibited in municipal parking lots between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m.

Limited monthly overnight parking is available on municipal lots from 7 p.m. – 7 a.m.

Overnight Parking

By-law No. 2023-0094 prohibits the parking of a vehicle on all Town roads for longer than six consecutive hours at any single location, unless otherwise specifically posted.

Winter on-street parking restrictions

Winter parking restrictions

Effective November 15 to April 15:

On-street parking is prohibited between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m.
Effective on all Town streets, unless posted as a '12 Hour' limit zone
Regulation is proactively enforced during the winter months
This regulation helps to facilitate winter road maintenance activities

Snow removal

The placing or pushing of snow or ice onto roadways or cleared sidewalks will obstruct or encumber vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Do Not push snow across roadways because the trail of snow does turn to ice. The Town's Obstruction, Encumbering or Fouling of Highways By-law 2019-0008 prohibits such action.

Improper snow and ice clearing can be a serious hazard to motorists and pedestrians. Your co-operation is requested. Please comply with the requirements of this By-law.

Be alert for snow plows and stay back at least 15 meters behind the trucks. Please avoid parking on streets during snowstorms to assist Public Works staff with winter control. Residents who do park their vehicles in a way that interferes with the Town’s snow clearing or road maintenance operations may receive a parking violation.

What is a penalty notice?

A penalty notice is a parking ticket issued within the Town of Halton Hills by a parking enforcement officer.

Why did Halton Hills implement the Administrative Monetary Penalty System (AMPS) program?

The Administrative Penalties System (AMPS) was launched to help the strained Provincial Offences Court system by simplifying the process and allowing municipalities such as the Town of Halton Hills to resolve parking violations internally. Keeping parking matters within the crowded court system could result in tickets taking months to resolve. Under the AMPS system, parking matters can be resolved within weeks.
AMPS is more effective because:

The Town can deal with parking violations in a timely manner
Individuals can continue to exercise their right to dispute the penalty notice by requesting an appointment review of the ticket with a Screening Officer or Hearing Officer
It allows for better use of court time and resources for more serious matters

How is a penalty notice issued?

A parking enforcement officer can issue a penalty notice for a parking violation by:

Affixing it to the vehicle
Serving it to the driver personally at the time of the violation

What if I missed the deadline to schedule a screening review?

The Screening Officer may only extend the time to request a review of a penalty notice of an administrative penalty where the recipient demonstrates on a balance of probabilities the existence of extenuating circumstances that warrant the extension of time. What happens if I don’t attend my scheduled screening review or hearing review?

If you do not attend your scheduled appointment, the penalty notice will be confirmed and the vehicle’s registered owner will be required to pay a fee for failing to attend the appointment.
The fee for failure to appear at a scheduled screening review appointment is $50 and $100 for a hearing review appointment.

What if I am not satisfied with the Screening Officer’s decision?

If the matter is still in dispute following the review by the Screening Officer, you can request a review by a Hearing Officer before the payment due date listed on your screening decision notice. The Hearing Officer’s decision is final.

Can someone else act on my behalf during a screening review or hearing review appointment?

Yes. You will need to authorize someone to act as your representative during a screening review or hearing review appointment. Please complete the Authorization to Act as an Agent form and submit by email to the Parking department prior to the scheduled appointment.

What will happen if I ignore the penalty notice?

If you do not choose one of the options listed on the back of your penalty notice, the Town of Halton Hills will assume you have decided not to dispute the penalty notice and you may be required to pay additional administrative fees.
Additionally, if the penalty notice and administrative fees remain unpaid, a notice of default will be sent to the Ministry of Transportation which will result in your Ontario Vehicle Permit renewal being denied.

My penalty notice is past due notice, now what?

If your penalty notice is past due, this means that the Town of Halton Hills has not received payment of the penalty notice or you have not requested a screening review appointment before the deadline. You are no longer eligible to request a screening review appointment. Immediate action must be taken to avoid additional administrative fees. I just received a final notice, now what?

If you have received a final notice, this means that the Town of Halton Hills has not received payment of the parking ticket or penalty notice. You must take action to avoid paying at the Ministry of Transportation when you renew your Ontario Vehicle Permit.
